Bouldering questions, answered.
Everything you need to know before showing up — gear, grades, the setting cadence, and bringing kids.
Yes. We use a refined color-coded circuit system that correlates to the V-scale. By grouping routes into 3 to 4 grade ranges per color, we encourage you to move beyond the pursuit of a specific number and immerse yourself. This approach ensures a continuous, rewarding challenge that fosters genuine growth as a climber.
Our route setting team is constantly refreshing our walls, setting 10+ fresh climbs every Tuesday and Thursday. With a 3-4 week rotation cycle for every wall, North Mass offers dynamic, high-quality movement, keeping the gym at the forefront of the national climbing scene. You’ll always find new routes waiting for you.
Yes. While we recommend bringing both, if you do not have shoes we can supply you with quality rentals for $5. Rental shoes are free for first-time guests. Chalk is sold separately in our gear shop.
North Mass does not have a rope system or auto-belays. We’re a dedicated bouldering facility. All of our walls are focused on featuring a wide variety of wall angles, heights, and distinct top-out options to provide a complete climbing experience without the need for ropes.
At North Mass, climbers 14 and older can climb independently. Any youth 13 years old or younger must be actively supervised by a responsible adult during their visit, with a limit of two youths per adult. For younger kids not interested in climbing the larger walls, we also offer a separate room with friendly play routes.
Bouldering classes are entirely optional at North Mass. While our Intro to Bouldering class is a fantastic way for beginners to learn foundational techniques and build confidence, it is not a requirement. If you’re looking to just have fun and climb casually, you only need to complete a brief 5-minute safety orientation to get started.
Our training area is stacked with everything you need to climb stronger, including a MoonBoard, Tension Board I & II, Kilter Board, multiple hangboards, a Campus Board, Treadwall, and a massive spray wall. Our Tension Board II and Kilter Board feature adjustable wall angles, allowing you to customize the difficulty and style of your training.
